Preaching to the Choir
There’s an ad on NZ television that says:
Ask anyone who suffers from dry cracked heels and they’ll tell you that they’re painful.
I have a few problems with this.
- If I don’t know that dry cracked heels are painful, I can indeed find out they are by asking someone who suffers therefrom.
- Yet, if I need to ask, I don’t know - and therefore I don’t suffer therefrom myself.
- If I don’t suffer from dry cracked heels, I would not find any benefit in purchasing the product being advertised.
- Why is this ad addressed towards me?
From the other side, too:
- If I do suffer from dry cracked heels, I surely don’t need to ask anybody to find out that they hurt.
- Why isn’t this ad addressed towards me?
Needless to say, I didn’t buy this product. I can’t even remember its name.
Another triumph of advertising.
